Report on the seminar on words and symbols of the movements
Words and Symbols of the Alterglobalization Movement
On Thursday a seminar lead by Revue Mouvements, Espace Marx, IPAM, Babels, Les Pénélopes and others questioned the symbols and language used by the alterglobalization movement and participants at the ESF.
hey discussed the development of terminology and symbolic content and emphasized the diversity of meaning which comes from the different cultural, linguistic and social perceptions of the speaker. The seminar pointed out how important it is to build an understanding of the different aspects and meanings of the word alterglobalization, which are laden with both expectations and political ideology.

It became clear in the discussion that each person brings his or her own meaning to this word, and these many meanings also show the strength of the movement itself. Even though the importance of language for feminist approaches and the importance of accurate interpretation were not discussed, interpretation into other languages and into sign language was identified as a central topic for the first time.
